Day 3: Systemic Racism

Systemic racism is a reference to the systems in place that create and maintain racial inequality in nearly every facet of life for people of color. The concept was first named during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Factors like housing insecurity, the racial wealth gap, education and policing are interconnected. Black people make up nearly half of the homeless population, despite making up only 13% of the population (according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development). Signs of implicit bias lurk within our inboxes, social networks and the patterns of our daily lives. Looking at our own data can help us explore how implicit biases perpetuate systemic racism and how we can change our ways.
